Chemical composition dependent local lattice distortions and magnetism in high entropy alloys

A distinguish feature of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) is well-defined crystalline structure with chemical disorder. While, local lattice distortion a longstanding issue in HEAs and more challenging than traditional alloys. However, reports on are rarely related to compositions. Here, we use synchrotron radiation facility based XRD X-ray absorption fine (XAFS) examine averaged element specified distortions CrCoNi medium-entropy alloy (MEA), CrFeCoNi CrMnFeCoNi HEAs. The results showed that observed from patterns subtle. magnitude centred around certain alloying XAFS spectra keeps the same order, generally, Ni > Co Fe Cr Mn. positive strains proposed counteract negative thus leading observation subtle distortion. XANES suggested electron flexibility might be one factor contributes distortions. magnetic measurements indicated paramagnetic state all studied at ambient conditions.
